Onimusha: Way of the Sword never treats gameplay as a mere bridge between cutscenes, nor does it equate cinematic presentation with reducing the player to a passive spectator. Instead, it integrates its cinematic ambitions into the very fabric of its gameplay. Fluid animation, precise character movement, and the deliberate rhythm of combat generate the same sense of spectacle, scale, and dramatic weight that cinematic games often pursue by diminishing player agency and leaning heavily on scripted sequences. Here, cinematic presentation does not come at the expense of interactivity; it emerges organically from it. Onimusha has returned with remarkable force, and Way of the Sword feels less like the conclusion of a long-awaited comeback than the beginning of a new chapter.

While the numerous mechanics might take some getting used to, the experience remains powerful and perfect, worthy of the Onimusha name.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is easily a contender for game of the year, as it blends merciless action with skill-based combat in a near-seamless way. The story and visuals complement the ridiculously sharp gameplay extremely well, and though the camera can be a little problematic on rare occasions, that shouldn’t stop you from experiencing Capcom’s latest banger.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is a spectacular revival built around sublime, ever-evolving combat, striking Genma design and memorable boss battles. Repetitive side activities dull the blade slightly, but little else gets in Musashi’s way.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is not just a tribute to a classic franchise, a legendary character, a memorable actor, and a rich culture like the Japanese one. It feels much more like the beginning of a new phase. If this is indeed the path Capcom intends to follow, bring on more demons.

Overall, Onimusha: Way of the Sword may be the best game in the series and by quite a large margin. Definitely start out on Story difficulty to find your feet and get used to the game’s pacing of enemy attacks, but once you’re in the zone, it is a genuinely wonderful game from start to finish.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is a successful revival of Capcom's samurai franchise that pushes its gameplay in an exciting new direction while still retaining its core identity. The slower, more deliberate combat feels great, especially when you manage several deflections in quick succession before slicing your foe in half. Glorious. Not everything works. The English voiceover doesn't quite fit with the overall presentation, while occasional jaunts to and from multiple NPCs threaten to derail the otherwise excellent pacing. These are minor gripes, though; Onimusha is back, baby, and it's better than ever.
