Onimusha: Way of the Sword offers a solid foundation in certain aspects, particularly with its protagonist, Musashi. In addition to the combat system and several distinctive ideas in its boss encounters. However, the game did not utilize these elements well due to a lack of enemy variety, an overly easy difficulty curve, lackluster level and quest design, and shallow exploration. These shortcomings held the experience far below its true potential, ultimately rendering the game a wasted opportunity on all fronts.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword's combat is as sharp as a katana, but unfortunately, that blade is uneven and dull elsewhere.

Onimusha - Way of the Sword delivers great Action and boss battles, but stumbles over itself. The modernising, soulless way of the open world has dulled this warrior's blade.

In the end, the return of Onimusha through this release proves Capcom's serious effort to revive one of its most venerable franchises in a style that blends the spirit of the past with modern-day challenges, smartly drawing inspiration from combat mechanics in games like Sekiro. While the game shone by delivering intense and challenging boss battles, alongside a stable technical performance that serves fast-paced movement, it faced a few clear obstacles. The weak AI of regular enemies and the dullness of the linear design for main missions negatively impacted the adventure's pacing, in addition to a drab visual tone that dimmed the luster of the game's world. Nevertheless, the experience remains an enjoyable and worthwhile stop for fans of the series and samurai game enthusiasts, provided you overlook a few missteps in balance and overall difficulty level.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword marks a fascinating yet overly conservative return for Capcom's iconic franchise, starring the legendary Miyamoto Musashi. While boasting stunning cinematic direction, top-tier voice acting, and rock-solid technical performance on PS5, the game is held back by a passive AI, an overly permissive difficulty curve, and a combat system that pulls its punches. It's a solid, beautiful foundation for a series revival, though it ultimately lacks the necessary bite to truly master its craft.

Capcom is on a roll and continues to be so with a great revival of Onimusha. Way of the Sword feels great to play, the action is slick and tense, while the story is fun but a bit campy as well.

The biggest takeaway is the game’s riveting, intense, and masterful combat design, which ultimately defines the game and, to summarize what Takamura says to Musashi regarding part of his reasons for fighting: “it’s just damn fun.”

Onimusha: Way of the Sword returns after 20 years with an impressive boss-battling experience, featuring deep combat mechanics and cinematic encounters. While its story and exploration fall short of expectations, the game is still worth experiencing, especially for fans of sword-based combat, Souls-like games, and hack-and-slash titles.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword marks a strong comeback for Capcom’s series, modernizing itself without losing its gritty, blood‑soaked charm. With a magnetic lead like Musashi, memorable foes, and a combat system built on precision and reading the opponent, the adventure stays engaging throughout. Despite some flaws — uneven progression, recycled enemies, and basic side missions — the overall experience remains solid, fun, and surprisingly inspired. Its striking aesthetics and excellent Italian voice acting elevate the whole package, and when a game makes you crave a second run right after finishing it, you know it hit the mark. Onimusha is back, sharp enough to leave a lasting cut.

As an Onimusha fan, this revival is excellent. The series isn't as big as some of Capcom's other series, but it is just as satisfying to sit down and play, and it's easily one of my favourite games of 2026. If you've played any of the other games recently, Way of the Sword modernizes every aspect of the series and elevates all the tenets the series is known for.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is the modern revival that fans have been waiting decades for. It exudes charm through its comedy and fantastic cast of characters, while delivering intense combat and swordplay. While the console version does have some issues with lighting outside of cutscenes, and its story and side content could’ve done a better job matching the spectacle that the combat brings, it makes for a fun and entertaining action title.

After Resident Evil Requiem and Pragmata, I was expecting a Capcom hat trick. It didn't quite work out. *Onimusha: Way of the Sword* is a very good game, but it lacks the very quality that most recently set the developer apart from the competition: focus.
